Gr 5-8--When 12-year-old Logan moves to his new home in a sleepy Virginia town, he finds himself enmeshed in the mysteries that surround the abandoned Magic Forest amusement park. Was the previous owner of his house murdered? Why did the park close? Logan and his new neighbor, Arthur, prove to be both resourceful and brave as they take on scary rednecks and sly real estate agents in their pursuit of the truth. Narrator MacLeod Andrews reads Mary Downing Hahn's action-packed mystery (Clarion, 2009) with an understated expressiveness, yielding the spotlight to the tight, suspenseful story. Believable family relationships keep Logan and Arthur grounded and contribute a few light-hearted moments. Character voices are menacing, shrill, or humorous, but never tip over into caricature. Listeners are drawn into Logan and Arthur's world--a small town with its overgrown amusement park in the midst of a hot and humid Virginia summer--as their investigation grows perilous. A wonderful treatment of a terrific book.--Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, MD[Page 70]. (c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
