Reviews for Max & Milo Mixed-Up Message

Horn Book Guide Reviews 2014 Spring
Beaver Max has a crush; brother Milo is there with advice ("You can't just give her a boring letter. You need a plan..."). Max rejects Milo's hilariously outsized ideas, and a "boring letter" ultimately works, albeit one of Milo's devising. As in Max & Milo Go to Sleep!, the Longs make odd-couple brotherly tension and clean cartoony art a winning combination.

PreS-Gr 2--Those fabulous beaver brothers are back in a delightful adventure that concerns matters of the heart. Max has a crush on Molly, but he doesn't know how to put his feelings into words. He tries and tries to write her a love letter and is about to give up when Milo walks into the room and sees the pile of balled-up paper. His advice is simple: "Start by giving her something FANTASTIC!" How else will he win Molly's love? And the ideas flow. The goofy cartoon-style illustrations, many of them over-the-top, are rendered digitally in bright colors and incorporate large-print text in bubbles. In this laugh-out-loud picture book, the boys learn that often, when it comes to expressing love, less is more.--Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TN
