Reviews for Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

This sixth installment in J.K. Rowling's series begins ominously enough as storm clouds roll over London and Death Eaters wreak destruction. Alarmed by Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) increasing power, headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) employs Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe) aid in luring retired Potions professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) back to Hogwarts. Years earlier, Slughorn taught young Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort, played by Ralph's nephew, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin) and Slughorn may hold the secret of how and why the mysterious youngster evolved into the Dark Lord. As Harry embarks on this arduous mission, his peril increases, personified by sneering Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) under the sinister "protection" of Severus Snape (Alan Rickman). Meanwhile, Harry, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) suffer hormonal overload: Harry is infatuated with Ron's sister Ginny (Bonnie Wright), while Hermione's keen on Ron, who is now a Quidditch hero. Adapted by screenwriter Steve Kloves and directed by David Yates, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince nicely pulls together the numerous plot strands into a satisfying whole for this harrowing and suspenseful coming-of-age tale built around the classic theme of good versus evil. Highly recommended. (S. Granger) Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2009.
