In this interesting, eye-catching series, the reader learns about the history of Thanksgiving, from the Pilgrims' first trip on the Mayflower, to traditional recipes and crafts. In Thanksgiving Recipes, a list of ingredients and tools needed to make each recipe is included. The instructions for each are pictured, numbered, and written out, making them easy to follow. As an added bonus, each recipe is given background information about what might have happened at the first Thanksgiving. Life on the Mayflower is very different. The story is exceptionally well illustrated making it a beautiful book to browse. The nicely written story shares who would have been aboard, reasons for travel, and the hardships the travelers faced. Students will be very eager to learn more as the story focuses primarily on the Mayflower journey and not the settlement. The Strange But True section offers a short, but memorable list of extra facts. This is a fun series that will have value throughout the yea , especially when studying early American history. K-Gr 3--Muehlenhardt offers nine crafts, ranging from pop-up cards and woven paper placemats to more difficult projects like door wreaths, seed mosaics, and found-object sculptures. There is a paragraph summary of the first Thanksgiving. Each project begins with a list of the necessary supplies and includes clear directions and computer-enhanced cartoon illustrations. While the directions are clear, adult help will be needed for young children. Also, the number and variety of seeds required for the seed mosaic may be difficult to procure. Several projects require painting entire sheets of paper, and the drying time may be more than children have patience for. This is marginally recommended where such titles are in demand. Rooney includes basic recipes that are tasty and (generally) healthy--seven of the nine contain fruit and/or vegetables. They range from appetizers to desserts. The book includes helpful tips, a glossary of potentially unfamiliar cooking terms, and a chart of measurement conversions. The directions and pen-and-ink illustrations are clear, but the recipes do not indicate number of servings. The ingredient list is always on the second page, requiring one to read from right to left. Adult assistance is needed (and noted) when necessary. These recipes are nothing special, but should provide younger children with opportunities to feel they have contributed to the holiday meal.--Lisa Crandall, formerly at Capital Area District Library, Holt, MI
