Gr. 2-5. Published in association with Oxfam, this large-format book introduces five children and the foods they eat. In a South African village, Thembe gardens at school and cooks at home. In a Mexican town, Luis shops with his mother and tends sheep with his grandfather. In Bangkok, Thailand, AA learns how to choose food at the market and helps her grandmother prepare dinner. In a French village, Jordan works in his parents' restaurant after finishing his homework. In Kolkata, India, Yamini goes to school and to market. Each chapter follows the child through a typical day, introduces the family, and features a special excursion or celebration. The final section includes a recipe related to each child's story and a glossary of food terms. Clear and often beautiful, the many color photos of the children, their communities, and their foods bring each culture into focus. In conjunction with the clearly written text, the pictures offer children a better understanding of differences and similarities among people around the world. Each section also explores a special day in one child's life and the role of food in it: a wedding in South Africa, a fiesta in Mexico, a day out with Dad in Thailand, mushrooming in France, and a birthday in India. While children may not read this title from cover to cover, the color photos on each page and quotes are sure to pique their interest and encourage browsing. The recipe for a favorite dish of each youngster is appended; it will require adult assistance. The ingredients can be found at most supermarkets. A map and food glossary are useful aids.
