Reviews for Camp Granada : Sing-Along Camp Songs

Booklist Monthly Selections - #1 March 2003
Gr. 2-5. This vibrantly illustrated picture book for older children features lyrics to 34 camp songs, including such classics as "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" and "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt." Lessac's colorful and funny folk-art illustrations provide some story as they follow a group of campers through a day of activities, from the wake-up bugle to lights out. Readers will enjoy the subtle jokes on every page as frogs are slipped into pants, raccoons crawl into sleeping bags, and marshmallows are smeared on faces. Unfortunately, the music for the songs is not included, although occasional introductions to the selections suggest a suitable melody; for example, "Sing to the tune of 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat.'" While this may not be useful as a definitive collection of songs, it does offer an amusing glimpse of the community and landscape that make up camp life. School Library Journal Reviews 2003 June
Gr 1-5-Lessac has gathered the lyrics to more than 30 songs that campers have shared over the years, including "Kum Ba Yah," "Ship Titanic," and "Found a Peanut." The folksy, lush gouaches on double-page spreads focus on typical scenes-gathering around the flagpole, doing crafts, swimming, writing home, etc.-and feature ethnically diverse boys and girls sharing in the sheer ebullience of summer. Musical notations are not included. Readers who want to brush up on lyrics before heading into the woods will find this a welcome title.-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
