Reviews for Maisy Big, Maisy Small : A Book of Maisy Opposites

Horn Book Guide Reviews 2008 Spring
Maisy introduces opposites using simple words and toddler-tempting illustrations. "Maisy hot" shows Maisy in her bathing suit with a giant sun dominating the picture; the facing page shows "Maisy cold" bundled up and in the snow. Cousins gets creative, showing Maisy as spots/stripes, fluffy/spiky, black/white, and nothing/everything, though her young fans may not get some of the more abstract comparisons. Kirkus Reviews 2007 August #2
Maisy the beloved mouse is back as you've never seen her before in this clever collection of opposites. Each oversized, full-bleed, double-page spread presents a pair of antonyms. Maisy takes her fans on a whirlwind tour of both common opposites (hot/cold, wet/dry, in/out) and novel ones (fluffy/spiky, squiggly/straight). Throughout, the familiar mouse changes location, activity, mood and, most dramatically, appearance--"Maisy spots / Maisy stripes." Cousins's gouache artwork is as colorful as ever, with simple lines and spare details that will appeal to young listeners and draw their attention to the unique features that identify the pair as opposites. Maisy fans will not be disappointed. (Picture book. 2-5) Copyright Kirkus 2007 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.
