Reviews for Sonnets
The Book Report Reviews 1998 March-April
Each of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets is given at least one page, which includes the text of the sonnet, its theme and meaning, one possible interpretation, an explanation of difficult phrases and imagery, and a glossary of the unfamiliar words. The information is not thrust on the reader as the final and only "correct" interpretation. At least one open-ended question is given for student discussion. The last 20 pages of the book explain the sonnet tradition, themes and language of Shakespeare's sonnets, links with his plays, and hints for study of the sonnets. This book is invaluable for students and teachers of British literature or world literature. B&W photos of 16th-and 17th-century persons and scenes; chronology of Shakespeare's life and works; listing of plays and poems. Highly Recommended.
