Gr 8 Up--Quince, a neophyte vampire, must join forces with her newly appointed Guardian Angel, Zachary, to stop the mustering of a dangerous vampire army in Cynthia Leitich Smith's fantasy (Candlewick, 2011). Though Quince was able to temporarily defeat the seductive vampire chef, Bradley Sanguini, it was only later that she discovered he'd "blessed" everyone who partook of his signature dessert. Now they have a little less than three weeks to figure out how to keep hundreds of potential neophytes from joining Bradley's eternal ranks. The stakes only get higher when it's revealed that Brad has been possessed by the original Count Dracula and his spawn will be a stronger, faster, harder to kill vampire breed. With the help of the Vampire Queen, a pack of werewolves, and a funny, yet heroic werepossum, Quince hunts Bradley to a final showdown. Kim Mai Guest hits just the right notes in voicing Quince's passion, confusion, and determination as she must learn to field the vampire world. However, her young voice doesn't suit any of the male characters. Purchase only where Smith's previous titles, Tantalize and Eternal, are in great demand. Otherwise, this book is better enjoyed in print format.--Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT[Page 59]. (c) Copyright 2011.
